“Being recognised by your peers is the greatest feeling. My career has taken me all over the world to fantastic places, meeting incredible people. I suffer massively from impostor syndrome, to receive awards and to get paid for doing something I love still doesn’t make sense to me – but hey ho! Long may it continue”.

Ashley’s career started in local television newsrooms in Liverpool and his hometown Birmingham. Ashley’s versatility means he can sit comfortably anywhere in a news programme, easily able to switched between the weight of a breaking news story or have fun with the lighter side of life.  Ashley’s on-screen personality meant it wasn’t long before the producers recognised his talents and offers flooded in with bigger opportunities of life-style and light entertainment programmes. Watchdog, the BBC’s flagship live, consumer programme utilised Ashley’s many talents. Often seen undercover to highlight the wrong doings of businesses and traders, at times Ashley found himself in dangerous situations but always determined to uncover the truth.

BBC’s Holiday programme and LWT’s Dream Ticket regularly featured Ashley reporting from exotic locations where he enjoyed experiencing local culture, history and cuisine. “A truly dream job which sadly came to an end”, says Ashley.

Acting roles see Ashley playing himself in films; Nativity alongside Martin Freeman and Pam Ferris, The Snarling, a comedy horror film and Broken News, a satirical take on twenty-four-hour rolling news channels.

The youngest of six mixed-heritage children, Ashley was brought up by a single parent in a working class, inner-city area of Birmingham. Ashley’s mother instilled common decency and a hard work ethic despite the struggles and lack of opportunity. It is these values that Ashley believes have led him to success as a television journalist;

“Little did I know at the time that the difficulties growing up in Lozells Birmingham would empower me with the skills and ability to build on that experience.  It means I am able to communicate with people from all walks of life on their level. I believe this is one of the reasons I become a good storyteller and popular with audiences”. 

Ashley admits to being a geek when it comes to cars, motorbikes, and even trucks. He has a Class 1 HGV and Advanced Motorcycle licence and belongs to a Blood Bike charity. He has a passion for aviation and is training for a private pilot’s licence.
